On Monday, October 30, 2017, age 93, peacefully at his Oakland apartment. Preceded in death by his partner of 53 years, James B. Stevenson and his beloved sister, Zena Griffis. He is survived by two nieces, Shelia Pozorski and Kevin Griffis of McAllen, TX; and many dear friends. Garth was born in Borger, TX July 12, 1924. He served in the US Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 stationed in China. While living in China, he discovered his passion for art and design. Following the war, he attended Woodbury College in Los Angeles where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Interior Decoration. After a year working in Texas, he moved to Pittsburgh in 1951. In his beloved adopted city, he maintained a prestigious interior design practice for over 65 years. His exceptional talent led to his work being much recognized in local publications as well as Architectural Digest and the New York Times. Garth was involved in national, professional and charitable organizations. He was most proud of the St. Peter Child Development “Haute Decor” events and the 1974 grand gala opening of the Sarah Mellon Scaife Gallery. Garth and Jim enjoyed many years dividing their time between Pittsburgh and Ligonier, entertaining friends in both places. Garth was a consummate professional in his work. His kind, gracious manner, quick wit and unique style impacted everyone who knew him. Visitation for friends at McCABE BROS., INC.
