Indovina
Jean Anne (Fitzgerald)
Of Squirrel Hill, formerly of Friendship and Garfield, passed at 73 years old surrounded by family after a long but graceful battle with cancer on Sunday, June 10, 2018. Beloved wife for 45 years to Anthony, she was the devoted mother of Matthew (Christine Whispell), Julia, Christina (David Dieckoff), and Brian; loving and doting grandmother of Maeve, Fiona, Elisa, Charlie, and Leo; daughter of the late Ruth and John; big sister of Jack, Tom, Mame Slemenda, Anne Louise, Marian, Peggy Ranii, Ellen Fullerton, Terry, Mike, and the late Jim; and aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was a lifelong educator with experience teaching in public and parochial schools in Chicago and Pittsburgh. An engaged public servant and talented debater who never conceded an argument, she instilled in her family a deep sense of civic responsibility and served as a decades-long polling station volunteer, including her most recent post as Ward 14 Elections Judge. Self-taught and industrious in any craft she pursued, she was an accomplished seamstress, woodworker, glazier, and furniture restorer who refinished her Beechwood Boulevard Victorian multiple times. Jean was an avid outdoorswoman who enjoyed travel, walking, biking, fly-casting, hiking, skiing, and difficult-but-loving rescue dogs. #neverthelessshepersisted. Friends received at McCabe Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 5300 Penn Avenue, Bloomfield on Wednesday, 6-8 pm and Thursday, 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Sacred Heart Church on Friday at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Angel Ridge Animal Rescue (bit.ly/2JEwCyl) or an area no-kill animal shelter of choice. Condolences may be left at www.mccabebrothers.com.
