Obituary of Bruce R. McAvoy

Bruce R. McAvoy Died peacefully at his home in Shadyside on Monday, May 4, 2020, age 87. He was born on January 30, 1933 in Jamestown, NY to the late Agda Martinson McAvoy and George H. McAvoy, residents of Jamestown’s West End for over 60 years. In 1954 Bruce graduated from the University of Rochester and worked as an Advisory Scientist at Westinghouse Research and Development Center until he retired in 1990. He was also a lecturer in electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. He was the recipient of numerous corporate and professional awards, including the Centennial Medal of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineer, where he was an IEEE Life Fellow. He was past president of the Ultrasonic Society of the Institute. Bruce served in the Korean War and was a life-time member of the Disabled American Veterans. Bruce was known as a genuinely compassionate, warm, empathic man who offered support and guidance to those around him. He was a devoted friend to many, and he maintained many of those friendships for over half a century. Those who knew and loved Bruce would like to thank hospice, the caregivers and all the supportive teams that helped to fulfill his wish to die at home. Funeral and inurnment private.
