I send along my sympathy to the family of Dr Tierney and all those he touched. Prof Tierney taught me the required Mass and Momentum Transfer course in my undergraduate curriculum at Pitt. Tough course, tough book, but he made it approachable and understandable.

Other than the fact that we both earned a BS in Chemical Engineering, I note that we were both lectors, Jack at Sacred Heart and I at Holy Trinity in Quincy MA where I've lived since 1973 upon returning from my teaching gig at the University of Liberia in West Africa. We also shared some love for Chile. My job took me there back in the 1990s and I recently (Nov 2018) visited there with my partner on our way to Patagonia. Still love Santiago and Valparaiso and Costa del Mar. Please take comfort in knowing that at least one Pitt alum--and I suspect thousands of others--remembers Prof Tierney fondly.

Jack was a brilliant engineer. I was honored to team- teach with him over the years at Pitt. Jack had a great sense of humor and was enjoyed and respected by all.
