Obituary of Leonard A. Fabio
Leonard Anthony Fabio
Age 91, of Baldwin Borough, passed away peacefully on Saturday September 18th, 2021. Len was born on September 9th, 1930, the fourth of five children of the late Joseph and Carmela (Pappariello) Fabio. He grew up on the South Side and joined the U.S. Army in 1946, serving in Germany during the post war effort and later in the Korean War. Len married LaVerne Mary Silk in 1950, and the two remained devoted to each other for the next 60 years until her death in 2010. Together, they were the loving parents of three sons. Len approached everyone and everything with empathy, equity, and a good laugh. After working at J&L Steel and retiring from the U. S. Postal Service, he and his wife brought these values along when they founded Lamplighter Ministries, through which they served their community for over 20 years. Within Lamplighter Ministries they opened a food bank that served Thanksgiving dinner every year in Market Square for those in need of a meal and in search of communion. This tradition continues led by volunteers at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Len was the National Champion of the Disabled Veterans of America Chess by Mail league in 1980 and had a love of sports and the community it brought together. Len is survived by his son Anthony (Tanya), his sister Phyllis, grandchildren Jim, Raequel, Steven, and Nikhil, and by nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife, by his siblings Marie Bailey (Madison), Antoinette, and Frank, by his sons Leonard J. and Mark, and by his grandchildren Lisa and Daniel. Funeral services will be private and are entrusted to the professional services of McCabe Brothers Funeral Homes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Department of Veteran Affairs (www.volunteer.va.gov/apps/VolunteerNow/) or the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (https://give.pittsburghfoodbank.org/).
