Melinda Handler

Obituary of Melinda Sue Handler

Daughter, sister, friend, and humanitarian embarked on a new journey on Thursday, October 14, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer. Gone too soon at only 56 years-old, she leaves her mother Anne Handler, brothers Rick, Howard, Steven, and David (Shannon); and countless friends. She is preceded in death by her father Richard Handler. Melinda grew up in Shadyside, attended Sacred Heart High School and contributed to the success of her family’s restaurant, The Gazebo. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Spanish, she went on to work for Northwest and then Delta Airlines. Over a 21-year career as a flight attendant, she was continually recognized for her professionalism and the commitment she brought to her job. For several years Melinda worked Delta’s Pittsburgh to Paris flight. She loved traveling and learning about different cultures, living in Spain and Paris. A great source of joy for her was volunteering with Pittsburgh’s Surgicorps team, which travels to developing countries where surgeries are provided for free to those in need. Surgicorps team trips saw Melinda on missions to Brazil, Vietnam, Africa, Central America, and Bhutan. She and the Surgicorps team even had tea with the Queen of Bhutan at the royal palace. Linda Esposto (Surgicorps’ retired Executive Director) said,”Surgicorps team members conveyed that they were blessed and honored to serve with Melinda. Her calmness, compassionate spirit, and positive energy enhanced each trip and impacted the lives of not only her team, but all of those she embraced throughout the world.” She completed 13 missions. The essence of Melinda Handler was kindness, compassion, a quick wit, and mostly her love of life. She also enjoyed spending time with friends and family, playing tennis, and taking walks. On a bright, sunny day—think of Melinda Sue. Services were held privately by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated in her name to Surgicorps International, 3392 Saxonburg Blvd., Suite 400, Glenshaw, PA 15116. Condolences may be left at www.mccabebrothers.com
