Obituary of André R. “Andy" Giroux

André R. “Andy” Giroux Of Pittsburgh PA died peacefully surrounded by family on January 27, 2022 at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Miriam 'Mimi' (Horrell) Giroux, father of Mark (Bev Smith), Lynn (Michael Novara), Michael (Christine), Gail Fireman (Paul) and Bruce (Sunitha Somanath). Loving grandfather of Henry, Alexander, Stefan, Emory, Anna, Leah, Milan and Rowan. Andy was born on April 10, 1934, in St. Albans, VT. to Andrew B. Giroux and Marie Blanche (Ouimet) Giroux. When Andy was 6 his family moved to Springfield, MA where he lived until moving to Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Tech. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1958. After meeting on a blind date, he married Pittsburgh native Miriam (Mimi) Horrell, on June 21,1958 at Resurrection Church in Brookline. He began a 33 year long career with Westinghouse Electric Company where he worked on the earliest generation of computers. Andy and Mimi settled in Squirrel Hill where he was active at St. Philomena’s Parish. Andy was an inquisitive, lifelong learner, reader and chess player. In retirement, he took classes at Pitt, CMU and Osher. To stay fit he took aerobics classes where he often was the only man in the class. He loved music and sang in the St. Bede and JCC choirs. It was a common sight to see him with his portable chair hopping on the bus to head out to listen to the symphony in the park on a summer’s eve.
