I have just reached down a book, *The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons*, which Dr. Deeney gave to me as a parting gift, including a generous note, as I left Hong Kong after visiting for a year in 1983. Looking through the book again brought Dr. Deeney to mind again; I served as a voluntary discussion leader for one of his courses that year both fall and spring terms. He was a wonderfully kind, warm, gifted and generous man. My belated condolences to Dr. Cecile Chu-Chin Sun (孫筑瑾)--who, as it happened, had visited Indiana University in the Comparative Literature Department just the year prior to my coming to Hong Kong. I will always remember the many dimensions of John Deeney's example of living, learning, and teaching.
