Obituary of Kathryn Howard Boyle

Peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, September 14, 2022, age 87. Kay was raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa, only child of Guy and Prudence (Morgan) Howard. She graduated from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN. She then served her dietetic internship at the VA Hospital in Los Angeles and worked in several hospitals and nursing homes. She met Michael J. Boyle at Notre Dame and they were married in 1958. They moved to San Diego where Mike served in the US Navy and she worked as a Dietician. The couple returned to Pittsburgh, where they raised seven children in the Point Breeze area. Surviving are: Bridget Russell (the late Jeff), Katie Steinmetz (Karl), Michael (Marie), Mark (Kate), Molly Shirk (Brad), Matthew (Wendy) and Lt. Col. Ryan (Tracey) US Army, Ret. In due time there were 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Kay was very involved in St. Bede Church and School, serving as Parish Council and PTG President and leading the Folk Group and Children’s Mass music for many years. Active in the Alumnae Assn. of St. Mary’s College, she was a member and president of the Alumnae Board. Her other passion was Deer Valley YMCA Family Camp where she was on staff during Women’s Week for 20 years and, with her family, a Week 4 camper and member of the Board. Though Kay loved flowers and tended to them at both St. Bede’s and Deer Valley, she preferred to see them growing, so we ask that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Kay’s name be made to either the St. Bede Angel Fund, Saint Mary’s College Alumnae Fund or the Deer Valley Conservancy. Friends received at McCabe Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut Street, Shadyside on Sunday, 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Mary Magdalene Parish, St. Bede Church on Monday at 10 am. Interment private. Condolences may be left at www.mccabebrothers.com
