Maurice T. Murphy, Jr.

Obituary of Maurice T. "Mossie" Murphy, Jr.

Son, brother, husband and most importantly father, Maurice T. “Mossie” Murphy’s love of life didn’t come to an end with his death. After fighting cancer for the past three years, Mossie was taken from us early Tuesday morning December 14th, 2022. He passed surrounded by family and friends. A lifelong Pittsburgher, Mossie hailed from the East End’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood. After graduating from St. Edmund’s Academy in Squirrel Hill, Mossie entered Central Catholic High School and was a Class of 1982 graduate. Mossie excelled on the football field and in the classroom at Central Catholic and has maintained lifelong friendships with many of his classmates. Mossie went on to attend Lehigh University and played football all four years and was a brother at Delta Upsilon Fraternity. As a key offensive lineman, his block at the goal line enabled Lehigh to beat Army at West Point in the closing minutes of the game his senior year. Mossie’s greatest joy in life were his two sons Jack and Mickey. He helped coach them in youth football and was very proud to see them playing for Mt. Lebanon High School this past season. Going with Jack and Mickey to WWE, many Steeler Games and of course Duquesne basketball brought pure joy to him. His larger than life personality was contagious to everyone he met. Mossie is survived by his children Jack and Mickey and wife Abby (Nassif) Murphy, his mother Carol Anton Murphy, (the late Maurice T. “Mossie” Murphy, Sr.); brothers and sisters Billy (Sheila) Cauley, Jimmy (Lynn) Cauley, Jerry (Kathy) Cauley, Peggy Braun, Patrick (Karen) Cauley and Mary (Bob) Kiernan. And many nieces and nephews and friends. Friends received at McCabe Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut Street, Shadyside on Monday, 6-8 pm and Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Paul Cathedral Parish, St. Rosalia site, on Wednesday at 10 am. THOSE WISHING TO ATTEND, PLEASE GATHER AT THE CHURCH.
